The DIGEKS project provides tools and configuration files to customize a secure operating system for use in ICT-based exams (digital exams). DIGEKS provides the user interface for exam candidates, provides all necessary applications to perform exams, and restricts the use of certain resources. DIGEKS restricts the use of certain applications, files and communication interfaces, such as Bluetooth or wireless zones other than the school\'s own network. The current version of DIGEKS is developed as a free and open source system based on the Linux distribution KUbuntu. On the exam a USB-pendrive is used to boot up the candidate\'s PC with the locked down operating system and the necessary application software, like document processor, calculator and browser. Features
Secure user interface for candidates at ICT-based exams providing the necessary applications to perform exams. The system inhibits disallowed communication between candidates.
Configurable access to resources (such as files, web access, etc.)
Standard PC can be used; no extra infrastructure or installations (beyond the production of USB pensticks) are required. The candidates can use their own PC during the exam. The PC remains unaltered after the exam.
Simple surveillance system of PC status available.
Privacy of data (files, etc.) on PC is provided (only uptime status is communicated).
Supports access to cabled Intranet and to specified encrypted WLAN zones.
Future plans
* Develop more user-friendly configuration system to produce class-sets.
* Automatic start/stop of exams using data from central school authorities; automatic control of allowed aids during exam using data from school authorities.
* Support of more applications during the exam (e.g., mathematics).
* Update to current versions of KUbuntu (or other base-distributions), and applications (such as OpenOffice).
Get Involved
The DIGEKS project is organised as Open Source Software, and is available at http://code.google.com/p/digeks/ (where further details are available).
DIGEKS will create a user forum with the purpose to further develop solutions to support ICT-based exams.
